Washington, D.C.’s Cherry Blossoms – Anticipated Peak Bloom in 2024

Washington, D.C.’s Cherry Blossoms – Anticipated Peak Bloom in 2024

The National Park Service (NPS) has announced a projected peak bloom period for Washington, D.C.’s beloved cherry blossoms: between March 23rd and March 26th, 2024. This prediction comes despite the unique challenge of an unusually warm January, which disrupted the cherry trees’ typical dormancy period.

Understanding Peak Bloom

The NPS defines “peak bloom” as when at least 70% of the cherry trees surrounding the Tidal Basin have blossomed. This annual display of light pink flowers signifies the arrival of spring in the nation’s capital. The Tidal Basin, boasting over 3,000 cherry trees, owes its famous spring scenery to Tokyo’s Mayor Yukio Ozaki.  In 1912, he gifted our nation’s capital with the cherry trees.  The collection primarily consists of Yoshino and Kwanzan varieties, with the Kwanzan trees blooming about two weeks after the Yoshinos, strategically extending the viewing window for visitors.

A Look at Historical Blooms

Over the past two decades, peak bloom for the cherry blossoms has been remarkably reliable, consistently falling in late March or early April. However, in recent years, peak bloom occurred on March 21st, 2022, and March 23rd, 2023, despite the varying weather conditions.

Petalpalooza is a free, full-day event with live music, interactive art installations, and engaging activities along the scenic Anacostia River on April 6th. Directly following will be the Official National Cherry Blossom Festival Fireworks Show capping off the evening. It is set to music for an unforgettable experience. These events provide entertainment and a way for visitors to interact with the beauty of the cherry blossoms and participate in a longstanding Washington, D.C. tradition.
