One Day in…Charleston, USA

One Day in…Charleston, USA

Traveler Profile: Ashleigh, 35, USA

Location: Charleston, South Carolina

Time of Year: May

Travel Goals: Immerse myself in the local culture and city’s history, and savor flavors of Lowcountry cuisine

My day started with a Southern-style breakfast at Callie’s Hot Little Biscuit. The smell of fresh biscuits in the air was a temptation I couldn’t resist. I wound up choosing a classic biscuit with country ham and cheddar. The tasty start set the tone for a day filled with adventure.

Historical Stroll through the Battery

Next on my agenda was a walk through the Battery, a historic area with old mansions and oak trees covered in Spanish moss. The charming architecture and sea breeze can almost transport you back in time; it gives a real sense of the city’s rich history.

Visiting Plantations: Middleton Place and Magnolia Plantation

My historical journey continued with visits to Middleton Place and Magnolia Plantation. Middleton Place has peaceful gardens, and Magnolia Plantation showcases stunning azalea gardens. Both estates provided a glimpse into the South’s plantation lifestyle.

Fellow Traveler Tip: Plan your plantation visits to enjoy the gardens and guided tours to the fullest.

Lunch at Husk: A Culinary Adventure

I wanted to check out Husk for lunch because it’s known for its farm-to-table approach. I ordered Shrimp and Grits, a classic Lowcountry dish and a personal favorite—the commitment to local ingredients made every bite a flavorful pleasure. This restaurant offered a true exploration of the region’s cuisine.

Charleston’s Waterfront Park: Afternoon Tranquility

After lunch, I wandered over to visit Waterfront Park. It was a nice afternoon retreat after a great meal. I lounged on the grass, enjoying the ambiance and watching sailboats glide through Charleston Harbor. The Pineapple Fountain, a symbol of hospitality, was definitely a highlight and worth stopping for a look.

Carriage Ride: Exploring the Historic District

To explore the Historic District more authentically, I chose a carriage ride. The ride came with a knowledgeable guide who shared stories from the city’s past. Not only that but, the rhythmic clip-clop of the horse walking made the historic charm impossible to miss at every turn.

Dinner at Poogan’s Porch: Southern Hospitality on a Plate

As evening approached, I headed to Poogan’s Porch for dinner. The restaurant is housed in a Victorian building, and it screams Southern hospitality. I had the She-Crab Soup and Carolina Gold Rice Risotto. They were both amazing. I felt like this restaurant did a great job showcasing the flavors of Lowcountry cuisine.

Evening at the Historic City Market

Charleston’s Historic City Market came alive as the day was winding down. Local artisans came together, showing off and selling their crafts. It was fun to watch, and it created a lively atmosphere. From sweetgrass baskets to handmade jewelry, the market was full of unique souvenirs that captured Charleston’s essence.

I bought more than a couple of things that night. I found a cute little silver bangle braclet that was also adjustable and it had Charleston on a map as the charm at Charleston Map Jewelry. I also got a couple lollypops from Lilli’s Old Style Lollis. They make them from cane sugar with organic fruit. I found many things I wanted and ended up leaving with several bags.

The market spans three blocks is filled with handmade local artisan goods. Time flies while you are there, too. Before I knew it, it was getting late, and it was time to return to my hotel room.

Nighttime Charm on Rainbow Row

On the way back, I walk down Rainbow Row, a row of pastel-hued Georgian townhouses. The cobblestone street, lit by lanterns, has a timeless charm. Each house seems to have its own story to tell. The walk back was a picturesque end to a day filled with history, culture, and culinary delights.

The Bottom Line

Charleston is an interesting blend of history, culture, and culinary excellence. Whether strolling through historic streets or savoring Lowcountry dishes, the city invites you to immerse yourself in its Southern charm. The Charleston City Market is a must-see to get a real sense of the local culture and scene.
