Travel Goals

See really big trees, hike cool trails, and chill by the beach.

When my adventure began, the sun had just started to peek through the towering trees of Redwood National Park. After spending last night and half the morning preparing a picnic and camping gear, I was prepared for a day of exploration of this natural wonderland, home to some of the tallest trees on Earth. Gear in tow and camera-ready, I embarked on a long-awaited journey that promised paradigm-changing views.

Morning Drive on the Scenic Parkway

I drove the scenic drive along the Newton B. Drury Scenic Parkway, a 10-mile stretch winding through the heart of the park. The towering trees took my breath and made me feel so small. Each turn in the road came with new views of the awe-inspiring giants, and I couldn’t help being rendered speechless by the ancient forest.

I made a pit stop at the Prairie Creek Visitor Center to get information about the park’s history and pick up a map. The knowledgeable park rangers shared a few fascinating tidbits about the diverse ecosystems and wildlife that call the park home. With newfound knowledge, I continued on my way.

Check the weather and road conditions before going, as the roads can be blocked after fairly recent storms.

Hiking Adventure in the Forest

I went hiking along Prairie Creek and Foothill Loop Trail. This 2.4-mile loop promised a taste of the diverse redwood forest habitats. As I walked, the air was filled with the earthy scent of the forest, and the rustling leaves were a soothing soundtrack. Along the way, I encountered glimpses of wildlife – a squirrel darting between the trees and a deer grazing in the distance. It was a realignment with nature, and each step seemed to deepen the connection with these ancient living skyscrapers.

Beach Time at Gold Bluffs

After my morning hike, I drove to Gold Bluffs Beach, a hidden gem at the end of a short trail. The trail opened up to a golden sand beach framed by rugged cliffs and the Pacific Ocean. I pulled out the food I prepared for lunch and enjoyed my picnic in the sand.

Afternoon Magic in Fern Canyon

I headed down the James Irvine Trail to Fern Canyon as the afternoon progressed. It is a 3.2-mile trail that leads to a canyon covered with towering ferns. It had an almost otherworldly atmosphere.

Fern Canyon definitely lived up to its name. The trail wound its way alongside a little creek. It is a photographer’s paradise, and I couldn’t resist capturing the beauty of this place in a few pictures of my own.

Bring extra water, snacks, a first aid kit, and other essentials because you don’t get many opportunities in the park.

Chillin’ Under the Redwoods

I wanted to set up my campsite before the sunlight faded. Camping in the Redwoods has been a trip I’ve wanted to take for a long time, and it exceeds all expectations.

Once I’d reached one of the park’s campgrounds, it was time for a campfire under the towering trees. The scent of burning wood is such a nostalgic thing for me.

Smores Of Course

I love smores. So I had everything you needed and began assembling my smores as soon as the fire was ready. Roasting marshmallows over the crackling fire is also an excellent way to make new friends. Before you knew it, laughter and shared stories echoed through the campground as fellow visitors joined in the communal experience.

Under the night sky, I laid back on a blanket, gazing up at the stars through the canopy of redwood branches. As I lay there drifting to sleep, I was planning my trip back to discover all that was missed this time.

This one day, it offered only a glimpse into the timeless beauty of the redwood forest. It left me with a sense of awe and gratitude for preserving landscapes like this. Each step had been a reminder of the importance of connecting with nature and appreciating the delicate balance of ecosystems.
