One Day In…St. Augustine, USA

One Day In…St. Augustine, USA

Traveler Profile: Ashleigh, 35, US

Location: St. Augustine, Florida

Time of Year: April

Travel Goals: History, museums, beach time, and fresh seafood

Exploring St. Augustine, the nation’s oldest city, is a journey through time, where historical wonders blend seamlessly with the allure of the coastal landscape. As a devoted history buff, my day began with toes in the sand at St. Augustine Beach, setting the tone for an immersive experience filled with rich heritage and delightful coastal pleasures.

The day began with a sunrise stroll along St. Augustine Beach, where the vivid hues of the morning sun painted a mesmerizing canvas above the ocean’s horizon. Opting for a prime seat on the pier, I relish the serenity, often sharing the tranquil setting with only a handful of early risers.

Fellow Traveler Tip: The early morning presents the optimal time to visit the beach, avoiding both the heat and crowds while reveling in the breathtaking sunrise.

Enjoy a Bite to Eat at Island Donuts

Mid-morning, I had to stop to visit Island Donuts. In this family-owned breakfast haven, aromatic coffee and delectable donuts set the stage for the day’s adventures. With my treats in hand, I made my way towards the next destination, passing through the historic Aviles Street, the oldest street in the country.

Fellow Traveler Tip: Aviles Street, a free historical site, offers a glimpse into the city’s past and conveniently lies on the route to Ripley’s Believe It Or Not Museum.  visitstaugustine.com/thing-to-do/aviles-street

Check Out One of St. Augustine’s Oldest Structures

A pause at the Father O’Reilly House Museum revealed a structure dating back to the First Spanish Period, standing as one of the city’s oldest. Despite its 1691 origin, the museum retained its historical charm, providing an insightful glimpse into St. Augustine’s architectural heritage.

Fellow Traveler Tip: The St. Augustine Tourist Center is a valuable resource for more information.     visitstaugustine.com

Afternoon at the Ripley’s Believe It Or Not Museum

Ripley’s is a great place to spend the day. I love exploring the array of rather odd exhibits, from mind-bending illusions to peculiar artifacts, creating a memorable journey where the bizarre and fascinating collide. This museum will keep even the most curious people entertained with hours of unique exhibits.

An Evening of Paranormal Investigation

As the sunset, I was ready to embark on a historical journey through all the city’s most notable haunts. Touring the city’s historic haunts and hearing tales that intertwine the city’s rich history with ghostly encounters creates a memorable experience that blends the paranormal with the past. Exercise and fear are just the ticket for working up a good appetite.

Seafood Restaurant’s Catch of the Day

One of St. Augustine’s best features is the fantastic fresh seafood. There are plenty of restaurants to choose from, so there is something to fit anybody’s taste. I love trying the ‘specials’ dishes usually made from the morning’s catch. For a restaurant where the tantalizing flavors of New Orleans come to life, you can’t go wrong with Harry’s Seafood Bar and Grille. Harry’s invites you to savor the spirit of New Orleans in every delicious bite, delivering an unforgettable dining experience reminiscent of the vibrant culinary scene in the heart of Louisiana.

Fellow Traveler Tip: Reservations aren’t always necessary but recommended.
