Travel Goals: Check out the city’s charm, experience its rich history, and savor Southern hospitality.
When I arrived in Savannah, Georgia, its timeless beauty immediately swept me away. The Spanish moss draping the historic squares created an air of mystery, while the cobblestone streets whispered tales from days long since gone.
Southern hospitality greeted me at every turn, inviting me to enjoy the city. With just 24 hours to spare, I was determined to soak up every ounce of Savannah’s charm, savor its flavors, and lose myself in its rich history.
Morning Delights
I began my day at The Sentient Bean, a local favorite. With a steaming cup of coffee in hand and a flaky pastry to nibble on, I felt energized and ready to explore. Forsyth Park almost called my name, drawing me in. I strolled beneath the live oaks and couldn’t help but feel a calm wash over me.
Next, I step back in time at the Owens-Thomas House & Slave Quarters. The meticulously restored mansion offered a peek into Savannah’s past, from the lives of wealthy landowners to the harsh realities of enslaved people. It’s a sobering reminder of the city’s history and a testament to its progress.
The Cathedral Basilica of St. John the Baptist followed. Its Gothic Revival architecture was breathtaking. I was awestruck by the stained-glass windows’ beauty and the serenity permeating the air.
Afternoon Adventures
I made my way to River Street for a taste of classic Southern hospitality. Mrs. Wilkes Dining Room is a must-visit, where family-style platters filled with fried chicken, collard greens, and cornbread offer a true taste of the South. I savored each bite, enjoying the flavors and the sense of community that permeated the room.
With lunch finished, it was time for a bit of adventure. I joined a ghost tour through Savannah, listening intently as tales of hauntings, pirates, and hidden secrets were told. The chill in the air sent shivers down my spine, but I couldn’t help but be captivated by the city’s darker side.
The City Market came next, and the atmosphere was alive with the sounds of local artisans and street performers. I got caught up in the eclectic mix of shops and eateries, browsing for unique souvenirs and seeing the lively ambiance.
Evening Enchantment
As the day was almost over, I found myself drawn to the Savannah River for a sunset cruise. The city lights twinkling lit the sky, casting a magical glow over the water. Sipping on a cocktail, I breathed in the salty air and let the gentle breeze wash over me. I had felt utterly content in that moment of tranquility.
Dinner called, and I answered with a visit to Husk. The restaurant’s innovative dishes and seasonal ingredients promise a culinary experience like no other. I opt for a table on the rooftop terrace, where I’m treated to breathtaking views of the city skyline under the starlit sky.
To end the night on a high note, I headed to Moon River Brewing Company for a dose of live jazz. The soulful melodies filled the air, whisking me away to another time and place. Sipping on handcrafted cocktails, I lost myself in the music and the company of fellow travelers.
Fellow Traveler Tip: For a real scary adventure, head over to Bonaventure Cemetery, where Victorian-era gravestones shrouded in Spanish moss are a hauntingly beautiful peek into Savannah’s past.
