Travel Goals

Island vibes, culture, wildlife, and great food!

I love Koh Samui! Thailand’s island paradise is renowned for its breathtaking beauty, tranquil beaches, and vibrant culture. In this ‘One Day in… Koh Samui’ guide, I’ll share how to spend an enriching day on this ‘coconut’ island, from interacting with majestic elephants to uncovering hidden gems, and indulging in the island’s culinary delights. I’ve carefully selected each activity to provide a well-rounded experience of Koh Samui’s unique charm.

A Morning With Elephants

Begin your day at the Samui Elephant Haven, an ethical sanctuary where you can witness the majesty of rescued elephants in a humane and natural environment. The sanctuary provides a safe haven for these gentle giants, free from the rigors of the logging and tourism industries. Here, you can observe the elephants as they roam, bathe, and socialize in a setting that honors their natural behaviors.

My Insider’s Tip

Opt for a guided tour early in the morning to see the elephants during their most active hours and to avoid the afternoon heat. Don’t forget to bring bananas or watermelon!

Lunch Vibes

The Road Less Travelled Cafe in Nathon serves the best ‘sexy’ coffee and homemade chocolates! Its insanely cool interiors provide a calm and inviting environment. Peter and Pat, the owners, pride themselves on their commitment to sustainable practices, evident in their use of locally sourced ingredients and plant-based dishes. The staff are attentive and welcoming, enhancing the overall experience of the cafe. The Road Less Travelled is a cultural hub, occasionally hosting local art exhibitions and community events, thereby offering a unique insight into the local community and culture of Koh Samui. Dig into their Pho (with our own homemade broth) and fries – it’s a popular combo.

My Insider’s Tip

You should try the cafe’s signature artisan coffee or a handcrafted cocktail or two. Pat’s homemade cakes and chocolates, and the resident cats Salmon, Blue Cheese and Pumpkin, will be the highlight of your day!

The Secret Buddha Garden

With a replete tummy, head up into the hills of Koh Samui to The Secret Buddha Garden. This hidden oasis, created by a local fruit farmer in the late 20th century, is adorned with statues and temples amidst lush greenery, providing a mystical and peaceful environment. Stroll through this magical garden, discover its hidden statues, and soak in the tranquility.

My Insider’s Tip

Wear comfortable shoes for exploring the garden’s uneven and sometimes steep terrain. Don’t forget your camera.

Metaphysical Shopping

Once you’ve walked off your lunch, continue circumnavigating the island to The Magic House in Hua Thanon. It’s one of my favorite shops on this island, with a vast collection of beautiful crystals known to possess distinct energies and healing properties. You’ll find a collection of thought-provoking books, an apothecary filled with natural remedies, exquisitely crafted jewelry, and captivating art pieces, each telling its own story. You can even have your tarot cards read while you are there.

My Insider’s Tip

Purchase a specially curated crystal kit designed to bring positive energy and protection during your journeys, making them a meaningful souvenir or a thoughtful gift.

Chasing Sunsets

Continue around the island and conclude your day with cocktails at TEMBO, where the island vibe meets sophistication. This chic beach club boasts an impressive selection of handcrafted cocktails made with fresh, local ingredients and a view that overlooks the Gulf of Thailand. The impressive menu has something for every taste. It’s the perfect spot to unwind and reflect on your day’s adventures as the sun sets over Koh Samui.

Insider’s Tip

Ask the bartender for a cocktail recommendation based on your flavor preferences for a personalized experience.

When to Travel

The best time to visit Koh Samui is from December to February, during the dry season when the weather is pleasant and conducive to outdoor activities.

How to Get There

Koh Samui is accessible by air, with its own international airport, Samui Airport, offering flights from major cities. Alternatively, you can travel by ferry from the mainland, which provides a scenic route to the island.

The Bottom Line

Your day in Koh Samui is a journey through the heart and soul of this island. From the respectful interaction with majestic elephants to the tranquility of hidden gardens and mystical statues, the culinary delights, and the unwinding with innovative cocktails, each moment in Koh Samui is an opportunity to connect with the island’s magical spirit.
