Travel Goals: Get some great pictures of fall foliage and have some outdoor adventures
The Crisp Morning Air and Mountain Breakfast
The first thing I noticed as I arrived in Gatlinburg was the refreshing chill in the air welcoming me. Gatlinburg, located in the Great Smoky Mountains, is a picturesque destination that makes for some unbelievable photos. My primary goal was to take some pictures of the stunning fall foliage. Before that, I decided to kick off the day with a hearty mountain breakfast. The Pancake Pantry, a local favorite, became my morning breakfast spot. The smell of freshly brewed coffee and the sweet scent of pancakes and maple syrup reminded me of my great-grandmother’s house.
I ordered their signature Wildberry Pancakes, topped with fresh berries and whipped cream. The cozy atmosphere was complimented by mountain-themed decor, setting the perfect tone for the day ahead.
Hiking Adventure in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park
Once I finished my incredible morning meal, I started hiking in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. The park is full of trails with varying difficulty levels. I chose the Alum Cave Trail for its scenic beauty and moderate difficulty.
As I traveled through the vibrant autumn foliage, I snapped dozens of pictures of the views of the surrounding mountains. The views became increasingly breathtaking the deeper I went down the trail. The trail led me to the iconic Alum Cave Bluffs, where I took a moment to appreciate the natural beauty and snap some photos to capture the memory of this picturesque hike.
Fellow Traveler Tip: Check the trail conditions and weather before starting your hike, and carry water, snacks, and appropriate clothing for the adventure.
Lunch with a View at Cliff Top Grill and Bar
On the hike, I worked up an appetite. So I headed to Cliff Top Grill and Bar at the peak of the Gatlinburg SkyLift Park. The restaurant offers panoramic views of the Smoky Mountains, making it an ideal relaxing spot to refuel and snap a few more pictures.
I indulged in a Southern-inspired lunch, ordering the Smoky Mountain Burger with sweet potato fries. The combination of delicious food and breathtaking views made this dining experience a highlight of my day.
Exploring Gatlinburg’s Arts and Crafts Community
Gatlinburg is renowned for its vibrant arts and crafts community, so I spent my afternoon exploring the numerous studios and galleries. From handmade pottery to intricate woodwork, each shop displayed the talents of local artisans.
I picked up a handcrafted souvenir to remember my visit and enjoyed chatting with the artists. I learned a lot about their creative processes. The community’s charm and dedication to preserving traditional craftsmanship added a cultural aspect to my day.
Scenic Drive along Newfound Gap Road
As the afternoon unfolded, I drove along Newfound Gap Road. It’s a scenic route through the heart of the Great Smoky Mountains. The road offers stunning overlooks and opportunities to witness the fall foliage in all its glory.
I made several stops along the way to soak in the views and capture the beauty of the changing leaves. The vibrant hues of red, orange, and yellow created an eye-opening scene against the backdrop of the mountains.
Dinner at The Peddler Steakhouse
I wanted a classic Southern dining experience for dinner at The Peddler Steakhouse. Located along the banks of the Little Pigeon River, the restaurant is known for its aged steaks and rustic ambiance.
I ordered the Filet Mignon, cooked to a perfect medium, and paired it with garlic mashed potatoes and seasonal vegetables. I listened to the sound of the river as I savored every last bite of dinner. The food here is truly to die for.
Evening Stroll through Gatlinburg’s Downtown
As the sun dipped below the horizon, I walked through Gatlinburg’s charming downtown area. The streets were buzzing with activity from shops and attractions.
I explored the unique boutiques, sampled local treats, and enjoyed the lively atmosphere. Gatlinburg’s downtown offers a perfect blend of mountain town charm and entertainment.

Capping the Day with a Moonlit Gatlinburg SkyLift
Toward the end of my day in Gatlinburg, I decided to go out on the SkyLift during the evening. Riding the SkyLift to the summit under the moonlit sky provided a different perspective of the mountains and the town below. The view made some of the best pictures I’ve ever captured.
When I returned to Gatlinburg, the crisp mountain air and beautiful night sky created a tranquil atmosphere. It was an unforgettable way to cap off a day filled with outdoor adventures, delicious cuisine, and the vibrant culture of this charming mountain town.
The Bottom Line
Gatlinburg invites you to take in the natural beauty of the Great Smoky Mountains, savor Southern-inspired cuisine, explore local arts and crafts, and enjoy the lively downtown atmosphere. Be sure to wear warm clothes. The temperature up in the mountains can be quite chilly.
