As an expat moving to a new place it is necessary to make sure that there is good health care they can rely on. Apart from being a reliable hospital that they can trust, expats obviously need to make sure that the staff especially the doctors of the hospitals speak English or better other languages too.
For travellers, make sure to get good medical insurance (we recommend this one) and pack any relevant documents. For those planning to stay longer, this is just one of several things you should bring when you move, and don’t get to include the cost of insurance on your budget for moving to Vietnam.

HOW NOT TO SPEND TOO MUCH ON MEDICAL SERVICES
Don’t be easy to go lucky and reckless like most travellers or expats in Vietnam, make sure you have yourself covered for medical and other emergencies. To avoid spending too much money on medical services, get food medical insurance.
Even though the expenses for medical assistance in Vietnam is relatively cheap. But if you want to be in an international hospital or have doctors who can speak with you without any language barrier and are educated abroad, the only way is you being able to spend money.

In the emergency room, there is a big chance that you will find an English speaking nurse and doctor but sometimes you can be unlucky. If you can’t find a local to come with you, make sure you have a translation app on your phone downloaded.
The fee for emergency services here is very cheap. I once went in for stitches for my knife cut on my finger. It took less than 30 minutes and paid 500K VND ($25-$30) and $30 ($1.25) a week later to take out the stitches.

Watch out for insurance gotchas:
1) You are probably not covered for riding motorbikes in Vietnam unless you have a suitable licence in your home country. Even if you do have such a licence, you might not be covered for other reasons:
2) You are not complying with local law when you ride. In Vietnam you need a local licence obtained by passing the local riding exam. The theoretical question paper is in vietnamese, or was the last time I checked.
3) Your insurance covers you for vacations or maybe even business. If there is no busiess cover and you teach, then there are grounds to refuse a claim.
4) Even if you have cover (business and/or leisure), some policies will refuse a claim if you only have a one way ticket from your last destination or your home country.
Don't dream! If it is arguable that you have broken the terms of a policy, payment can and often will be refused.
International hospitals are very expensive, way beyond any income you might have by teaching. Just because someone else has got away with it for years doesn't mean you will get away with it.
All the above gotchas are real. There may be other problems I haven't heard of.
One option that is not here for Vietnam is to use a high quality local hostpital, but you will need Vietnamese fluent friends even though the doctors may speak passable English. The most famous hospital that has modern medical facilities is Cho Ray in Ho Chi Minh. By being a foreigner, you have premium access and an air conditioned waiting room. You will be taken to the doctors by a guide (who will not speak English), often with a group of other foreigners and being dropped off at your particular specilaist with the group continuing o its way to the next destination. You will have to find your own way back to the out-patients waiting room to pay. The fees will be way higher than a local, but way less (by a factor of up to maybe ten) than a private hospital. Most of the doctors you will see at Cho Ray also work for International hospitals. The theory behind this, according to locals I have talked with, is that the doctors can make a half decent salary in the Internationals to compensate for the pittance they are paid in Cho Ray. Cho Ray benefits by charging higher fees and that money will subsidize treatment and equipment to the benefit of local patients, A win-win.
You WILL almost certainly need a local Vietnamese fluent friend if you are treated or hospitalised at Cho Ray. I have done a couple of outpatient sessions there over the years. Care was excellent, admin was a small nightmare.
Stay well folks and use Grab or GoViet bike or taxi as an alternative to riding a motorbike yourself. it is a LOT safer.
Bicycles are not a bad option. A good second-hand bicycle is around $50. A new one is $100 up. Maintenance is cheap or DIY is pretty easy. Parking is a lot easier. Get a good quality lock and chain though, or you may be buying a new bicycle every month. (Arguably 95% or more of Vietnmese are honest and don't steal or cheat. That leaves 5% to be a pain in the ass.
